At Loisir Sport Outaouais’ annual gala at the end of December 2023, Mansfield-et-Pontefract weightlifter Xavier Lusignan was named the male athlete of the year for the second consecutive time. The title comes with a $1,200 scholarship and appreciated recognition for the young athlete, who completed his last year in the junior category and is continuing his studies at the University of Quebec in Outaouais.

“We recognize this accomplishment, it’s fun that the region recognizes the exploits we had during the year,” he said (translated). “This is the 2nd year in a row that I’ve won it for accomplishing a new thing. I have just finished there, but that means we move on to the next step, we fall. So these are really the best weightlifters that I will have the honor of competing against during the next competitions. On top of that, category 3 means that there is a new category 3, which will bring me new challenges. So I’m, we’re really interested in where the year is going. Confident, we continue to do what we have been doing since the beginning.”

His junior career having now ended, Lusignan wants to concentrate on his time on the tougher competition in the senior category. He hopes to have the chance to go to the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

“Really interested in where the year is going, confident. We continue to do what we have been doing since the beginning, we will train hard and then obviously this year’s Olympics is not an option for us,” he said (translated). “We are starting to prepare for the next Olympics in 2028. There is a competition which is organized by Arnold, the well-known actor, and the very popular bodybuilder that we know. He organizes a competition, it’s called the Arnold Classic and then it’s a kind of Fitness Expo.”

The next event, in which Lusignan will participate will be the Arnold Sport Festival, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio from February 29 to March 3. Even if it was not a recognized competition, Xavier hopes to take advantage of this experience to discover new approaches.
