Switching mobile or internet plans will be cheaper starting in June
Starting June 12th, 2026, Canadian consumers will be able to switch mobile phone or internet service plans more easily, without having to pay certain activation or cancellation fees, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced. (Conseil de la radiodiffusion et des télécommunications canadiennes)
This new measure aims to promote competition among providers and remove financial barriers that discourage customers from switching plans. As a result, activation fees or plan-change fees, which often range from $30 to $80, will be prohibited, except in cases where a physical installation requires a technician’s visit.
In addition, early termination fees may no longer be charged when the contract does not include the provision of a subsidized device, allowing customers to cancel their subscription without penalty under these circumstances.
These rules apply to individuals, small businesses that use wireless services, and residential Internet service customers.
The CRTC is also preparing other changes, including measures to improve the transparency and clarity of information about service plans in order to make it easier to compare offers. A decision on this matter is expected in the summer of 2026.
This announcement follows a broad public consultation launched in 2024, reflecting the regulator’s commitment to better protecting consumers in a sector that is essential to daily life.
