Pontiac’s federal representative Sophie Chatel will once again represent the Liberal Party of Canada in the next election, making the announcement on social media February 10. She was first elected in 2021, replacing former Liberal representative William Amos. In addition to representing the Pontiac riding, she is the Chair of the Liberal’s Rural Caucus and also sits on the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, as well as the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.

As far as the other parties go, the candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada from the previous contest, Michel Gauthier, told CHIP 101.9 late last year that he was considering running again. However, the party’s nomination process isn’t scheduled to start until later in 2024. Denise Giroux, the NDP candidate in the previous two elections, told CHIP 101.9 after the 2021 race that she was ready to step back from the role.

The date of the next election has yet to be announced, and the government’s current mandate ends in fall 2025. However, the election could come sooner if the Liberals’ current supply-and-confidence agreement with the NDP ends.
