In an interview on January 10, Pontiac’s MP Sophie Chatel discussed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement which took place at the beginning of the week on January 6.

Chatel, who was one of the members of the Liberal caucus to call for Trudeau to step aside as leader of the party last year, thanked him for his service.

The outgoing Prime Minister also requested that the Governor General prorogue parliament until March 24. Prorogation effectively ends all business in front of parliament, including legislation, committee work and inquiries. Chatel said that parliament wasn’t functioning as effectively as it could have prior to prorogation, and thought it an appropriate step to take.

Chatel didn’t offer an endorsement, but said that she was most interested in what the leadership candidates bring forward as far as economic policy.

She added that she thought the party’s next leader should be fluently bilingual in English and French, responding to comments to the contrary made by her colleague and leadership hopeful Chandra Arya.

The next Prime Minister and leader of the federal Liberal Party will be chosen on March 9.

The full interview with Chatel (9m15) is available here.
