This article is a part of a series of interviews CHIP 101.9 will be conducting with the candidates for the ongoing federal election. Each was offered roughly 15 minutes to answer questions about their campaign, as well as their party’s policies on a range of subjects. For more of our reporting on the federal election, you can visit the special Elections section of our website.

Incumbent Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi Liberal candidate Sophie Chatel was first elected in 2021, after former MP Will Amos did not seek re-election following two high-profile blunders earlier that year. She won with a comfortable margin, receiving 43.4% or 26,899 votes, roughly 14,000 more than the second place finisher, Conservative Michel Gauthier.

Chatel was one of the first members of her caucus to openly call for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as leader of the Liberal party and went on to endorse current leader Mark Carney in the leadership race. She spoke about the differences in leadership between her campaign in 2021 and this year.

Chatel also addressed her party’s reversal on the consumer carbon tax, which had been a key plank in the Liberal platform since they formed government in 2015, but was quickly cancelled by Carney when he became Prime Minister.

The full interview with Chatel (15m25) is available here.
