Québec Solidaire appeals to CAQ to adopt Bill 198

1 April 2024 à 10:55 am

Opposition party Québec solidaire appealed to the CAQ government on March 28 to adopt Bill 198, which aims to protect elderly tenants in the midst of the current housing crunch. If passed into law, the bill would expand on a law tabled in 2016 by former QS spokesperson Françoise David, which would prevent landlords from evicting low-income renters over 70 who have lived in their unit for more than 10 years. Bill 198 seeks to expand the criteria by lowering the age to 65 and the length of tenancy to 5 years.

In a French-language interview with CHIP 101.9, QS MNA for Laurier-Dorion, Andrés Fontecilla, explained the intention of the bill.

Fontecilla added that the majority of opposition parties are in favor of Bill 198 and said that all that remains is for the government to take action.
