Possible bus driver strike on May 1

20 April 2023 à 1:24 pm

Unionized school bus drivers in the area could go on strike if they don’t reach an agreement with the bus line by May 1.

The union representing the drivers, Teamsters Local 106, issued a press release on April 19 warning of a possible action, as 197 of their members in the Outaouais, including 97 working for Autobus LaSalle, have voted in favour of a strike if negotiations with the bus line don’t conclude by the end of the month. In the Pontiac region, Autobus LaSalle services the Centre de services scolaires du Portage, Centre de services scolaires des Hauts-Bois and the Western Quebec School Board.

“We are fully aware of the repercussions these strikes could have, and we ask all those who will be affected to stand with the drivers. School bus drivers are important members of our community, keeping our children safe every day. All they are asking for are fairer salary and contractual conditions, which reflect their high level of responsibility,” said François Laporte, President of Teamsters Canada (translated).

Tara Betts, a delegate with Teamsters Local 106, said that the negotiations are over salary increases as well as the minimum number of hours per week.

CHIP 101.9 has reached out to Autobus LaSalle for comment.

The Centre de services scolaire des Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais has stated that their facilities will remain open in the event of a strike, but noted that parents should prepare to provide alternative means of transportation.
