Parti Québécois, UMQ denounce abolition of RénoRégion program

2 April 2025 à 11:48 am

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon denounced the CAQ’s abolition of the RénoRégion program and questioned the government in tandem with his new Terrebonne MNA Catherine Gentilcore, who was recently elected in a by-election. St-Pierre Plamondon believes that this program could help more devitalized regions such as certain parts of rural Outaouais. During a press briefing, he insisted that there was little to be gained for our society by eliminating this program.

“I want to be clear here: we’re talking about a program that targets Quebecers earning less than $30,000 for homes worth less than $150,000, a program that costs a mere $15 million a year. When it’s time to help big business, we don’t count the hundreds of millions of billions we’re throwing out the window, because that’s ‘calculated risk’. But when we ask more vulnerable Quebecers in precarious financial situations to tighten their belts for a pittance, then he has no problem forgetting the reality of Quebecers, particularly in the regions,” declared the PQ leader.

The Union des municipalités du Québec (UMQ) also strongly criticized the suspension of the Rénovation Québec and RénoRégion programs. The UMQ is calling on the Quebec government to rapidly renew funding for these programs, which are essential to the well-being of Quebecers. It is imperative, they say, to take into account the urgent needs of local communities and the most vulnerable citizens.

“The suspension of the Rénovation Québec, RénoRégion and home adaptation programs will directly affect the living environment of vulnerable people. These programs were widely used, and once again penalize people living in precarious conditions. At a time of crisis when we can’t afford to lose a single home, this decision is particularly worrying,” says Martin Damphousse, President of the UMQ and Mayor of Varennes.
