At the MRC Pontiac council of mayors meeting on August 21, council approved the signing of a confidentiality agreement with the renewable energy company Innergex. The Quebec-based company operates internationally, building and managing facilities hydroelectric dams, wind farms, as well as one solar farm in eastern Ontario.

The resolution notes that in February of this year, the MRC issued a call for interest in solar energy projects on the territory, to which Innergex responded in March. The company has had discussions with the MRC’s renewable energy committee, and the MRC’s legal counsel studied the proposed confidentiality agreement. The resolution adds that they are anticipating a partnership agreement to be submitted by Innergex at the end of August, which will also be reviewed by the MRC’s legal counsel.

MRC Director General Kim Lesage said that the Ottawa area, including a swathe of MRC Pontiac, is listed by Natural Resources Canada as having some of the highest photovoltaic potential in Eastern Canada. She said they had been approached by at least five renewable energy companies expressing interest in starting projects in the area.

MRC Pontiac Warden Jane Toller said that the provincial government would be funding made available for solar projects later this year, and they wanted to be prepared.
