Minimum wage increase in Quebec effective May 1st, 2026
The Government of Quebec is announcing an update to minimum wage rates that will take effect on May 1st, 2026, affecting several categories of workers, including general-rate employees, tipped workers, and agricultural pickers.
The general minimum wage will increase to $16.60 per hour, compared to the current $16.10. This adjustment is part of Quebec’s annual review of wage conditions.
Tipped workers will also see their minimum rate rise to $13.30 per hour, up from $12.90 since May 2025. Despite the lower base rate, tips remain entirely the property of the employees who receive them for services rendered. However, workers may agree to tip-sharing arrangements under internal agreements.
In the agricultural sector, piece rates are also being adjusted. Strawberry pickers will be paid $1.32 per kilogram, while raspberry pickers will receive $4.93 per kilogram. These workers must still meet or exceed the minimum wage based on their output.
In addition, the legal framework reminds employers that workers paid by commission or piece rate must, in all cases, receive compensation equal to or greater than the minimum wage for their work. Overtime is calculated based on a 40-hour work week.
Finally, the legislation prohibits wage disparities between employees performing the same tasks in the same establishment when differences are solely based on employment status.
