The Municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes has welcomed the Quebec government’s recent announcement to accelerate the construction of prefabricated housing units across the province, including a 24-unit affordable housing complex in L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, first reported by CHIP 101.9 a few weeks ago.
The new complex is planned for a future subdivision located near Centennial, Rochon and Front streets, on a site identified in the preliminary urban development plan. The chosen location supports the immediate launch of the housing project. The Municipality has also indicated it may be able to provide additional land for future residential development—excellent news for families and new residents, according to L’Isle-aux-Allumettes.
“Our council is fully committed to seeing this project through. Being one of just 11 municipalities selected across the province shows our ability and willingness to adapt quickly and deliver affordable housing solutions for our community. This 24-unit project goes beyond bricks and mortar: it’s about enabling our seniors to remain in their community and live independently, supporting young families so they can thrive, and welcoming new residents whose presence will stimulate growth and have a positive impact on our local economy. While we remain optimistic about federal support for the necessary infrastructure, we are also prepared to explore other funding options to ensure the project moves ahead without delay. With the subdivision plan already in motion, we are equally excited about the new opportunities to create additional residential lots,” said L’Isle-aux-Allumettes Mayor Corey Spence.
To complete the required water and sewer infrastructure for the new subdivision, the Municipality has already submitted a funding request under the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF). While awaiting confirmation, L’Isle-aux-Allumettes is actively exploring complementary financing options to ensure the project advances quickly. Habitations de l’Outaouais métropolitain is currently in the building design phase. The unit sizes, housing types (number of bedrooms), and exact rental rates are not yet known.
