Culture Outaouais Voices Concern Over Temporary Freeze on New “Support” Grants

Culture Outaouais has expressed serious concern following the Treasury Board’s decision to impose a temporary freeze on new financial aid in the “support” category. While the measure is described as temporary, the uncertainty it creates within the cultural sector raises significant worries about the stability of organizations and projects in the region.

On October 21, France-Élaine Duranceau, Chair of the Treasury Board, announced the suspension of all new funding commitments while government budget priorities are reassessed. This directive, part of a plan to return to budgetary balance by 2030, directly affects programs essential to the operation of cultural organizations and the execution of artistic projects across Quebec. Julie Martineau, Director of Culture Outaouais, shared her concerns regarding the impact of this decision.

Concerns Grow in Outaouais Over Cultural Funding Freeze

In Outaouais, a region officially recognized for six years by the National Assembly as underfunded in cultural support, this announcement raises fears of setbacks in the catch-up efforts that have been underway in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Communications.

Every decision made in Quebec City has an amplified impact here. In an environment already marked by precariousness, it is essential that culture is not sacrificed in the name of budgetary recovery.

Culture Outaouais will continue to monitor the situation closely and reaffirms its commitment to working with the Ministry of Culture and Communications and regional partners to preserve the territory’s cultural vitality.
