André Fortin discusses Quebec’s budget for 2023

27 March 2023 à 2:19 pm

CHIP 101.9 caught up with Pontiac MNA André Fortin to get his take on the new provincial budget which was unveiled last week. He said that his initial reaction was that the CAQ government has based their document on economic growth projections that are much more rosy than the experts. He said that while Finance Minister Eric Girard was anticipating 0.6% GDP growth in the province for 2023, many other analysts were predicting less.

One of the most highly publicized aspects of the new budget was a tax cut of 1% for the lowest two tax brackets in the province, which is estimated to cost $9.2 billion over the next five years. Fortin said that there were some “inconsistencies” in how the cut would impact different groups of people.

Fortin also pointed out that in terms of infrastructure spending, the Outaouais was getting less than its fair share, as it represents 4.7% of the provincial population and is receiving much less in terms of funding.

The full interview with Fortin (10m40) is available here.
