25% tariffs: FMQ president calls for more solidarity at home
The Federation of Quebec Municipalities reacted strongly to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, addressing Treasury Board President Sonia Lebel and Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest on February 3.
In a letter, the FQM calls on the government to amend the law to allow municipalities to mark up the prices of calls for tenders for goods and services from the United States by 25% in response.
FQM President Jacques Demers explained in a French-language interview with CHIP 101.9:
The Department of Finance announced that as of February 4, $30 billion worth of goods from the U.S. would be subject to a 25% tariff. The implementation of the tariffs has since been pushed back a month.
In the meantime, the Demers believes that we need to equip ourselves to be better prepared for this type of event in the long term.
