CHIP 101.9 spoke with newly elected Rapides-des-Joachims Mayor Lucie Rivet Paquette as well as Director General Alana Bowes about this year’s plans in MRC Pontiac’s furthest flung community.

Revenues

Rapides council approved an increase to the mill rate of 5 cents per $100 evaluation, from $1.12 in 2023 to $1.17 in 2024, which Paquette said was due to an increase in expenses. However the biggest contributor to the small municipality’s revenues are transfers from various levels of government, making up $418,163 out of the $946,620 total.

Paquette also spoke about her experience working on her first budget shortly after being elected, as former Mayor Doug Rousselle passed away in September 2023.

Expenses

The municipality is making some sizable investments in their infrastructure this year, including a $313,554 overhaul of the roof of the municipal hall, primarily paid for with money from the gas tax (TECQ) program. Bowes and Paquette explained that they would also be upgrading the municipal docks at a cost of $47,550, with help from the MRC’s FRR component 4.
