Backpack Issues to Address for a Healthy Back-to-School”

26 August 2025 à 1:58 pm

Every school year, thousands of children head back to class—often burdened like pack animals. The Quebec Association of Chiropractors (ACQ) stresses the importance of ensuring that students use properly fitted, well-adjusted backpacks to help prevent pain and posture problems.

It is common to see young people carrying their backpack on just one shoulder. Combined with the fact that the bag is often too heavy, this can lead students to compensate by leaning forward or to one side. Chiropractor Dr. Marie-Hélène Boivin outlines the key features parents should look for when choosing a backpack for their child:

A poorly fitted, overly heavy, or unsuitable backpack, when worn over a long period of time, can even lead to postural deviations and back problems. Once again, Dr. Marie-Hélène Boivin emphasizes the importance of making the right choice.

The ACQ also offers practical advice on how to pack, put on, adjust, and carry a backpack safely. Looking for ideas to lighten the load?
