William Amos blamed by Speaker of the House of Commons

Pontiac MP William Amos was blamed for the second incident involving him during a zoom meeting. House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota delivered his ruling on Monday afternoon.

“We have often reminded Members that virtual sittings are an extension of House proceedings and that their conduct must follow our rules and practices, even when participating from a distance. As soon as an MP logs in to a virtual session and opens their camera, it is considered to be, for all intents and purposes, in the House. The reported facts are not contested and constitute a serious breach of the rules of decorum and an affront to the dignity of the House ”

The Conservatives now want the matter to be referred to the Procedure and House Affairs Committee, which will decide whether to sanction MP Amos. The Liberals replied that Mr. Amos had apologized and was going to seek the appropriate support, without specifying what support it is.

Mr Rota said he took note of Pontiac MP William Amos’s apologies and his commitment to seek the appropriate support, but that the role of the chair should be limited to determining whether the alleged facts are contrary to our contempt rules and whether they merit priority consideration.

It appears that members of the Procedure and House Affairs Committee will be conducting a study into the second incident involving Mr. Amos. The committee has several options: it could make recommendations to remedy the circumstances that led to such incidents or it could recommend a sanction against Mr. Amos.
