Pontiac MP William Amos applauded the announcement by BCE of a $ 2 million investment earlier this week to strengthen the telecommunications network in the MRC Pontiac. Bell is expected to establish an additional link between Chapeau, Quebec and Pembroke, Ontario’s telephone exchanges to improve the reliability of the network.

William Amos said he had spoken with the Bell Canada representatives to echo the demands of his constituents saying that it’s a security issue for Pontiac residents, especially seniors. This decision will improve the resilience of the telecommunication network, which will be particularly useful in emergency situations.

Last September, the Pontiac lost Internet and telephone services. The MRC Pontiac then reacted via a press release, arguing that the unreliability of these services puts the public at risk in the MRC. Another Bell outage occurred last October, making the total the number of service outages 6 over the last 9 years, despite the MRC’s complaints to Bell and the CRTC to ensure the redundancy of the telephone network in the Pontiac.

An article in Le Droit stated that William Amos learned about Bell’s plans to create a link between the telephone exchanges of Chapeau, in the municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, and Pembroke Ontario.

The construction of the network should be done during the summer and the redundancy line should be functional by September.
