US tariffs: which Canadian cities are most vulnerable?

US tariffs: which Canadian cities are most vulnerable?

Tariffs imposed by the U.S. do not affect all regions of Canada in the same way. Some cities are more exposed due to their reliance on industries such as automotive, steel, aluminum and wood.

An interactive map called Mapping Tariffs, developed by the University of Toronto’s School of Cities, shows where Canadian businesses and jobs are most closely linked to U.S. tariff sectors.

The tool allows citizens to search for their city or municipality and compare how these industries fit into the local economy versus the rest of the country.

Regions that rely more heavily on affected sectors may be more vulnerable to the impact of tariffs, such as reduced orders, production or business activity.

The map does not, however, predict job losses or economic damage. Rather, it illustrates the degree to which different regions are dependent on the industries involved.

Although the tool is only available in English, its use remains relatively simple and allows for a better understanding of the economic realities specific to each region.

For consumers, this situation also highlights the importance of supporting local businesses and favouring products made in Canada where possible.

To view the interactive map: search for Mapping Tariffs and select your city to discover its level of exposure to US tariff-impacted industries.
