“They can now close a small town’s school without consultation” -Diane Nault

At l’Assemblée nationale in Québec, many have criticized the gag order imposed by the gouvernment Legault in the adoption of Bill 40. The president of the Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais school board, Diane Nault, reacted to the news following a request from the Journal du Pontiac. Diane Nault criticized the government’s decision to eliminate school elections and turn school boards into service centers.

“The end of governance was immediate, the minister tabled an amendment on Friday. As we no longer exist, we cannot take legal actions. People have now lost this proximity service, the director general has full power without being accountable to citizens, he will only answer to the minister like in the health department. In addition, the minister gives himself veto rights, comparable to centralizing services, like in health, and he can now close smaller schools without consultation. Elected officials had implemented a policy of maintaining small schools, though there is nothing in the law that will really help our youth.
