The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) announced that yesterday (October 7) that they intensified their interventions around road construction sites. This large-scale day of operations aimed to ensure that all road users exercise extra caution when approaching road works areas in order to ensure everyone’s safety.

The SQ issued 295 tickets for excessive speeding, 126 tickets for other offenses such as not wearing a seat belt, using a cell phone while driving, reckless driving and others, as well as 70 notices of non-compliance. A total of twelve (12) notices of violation were also issued concerning poorly secured trailers. In the Outaouais-Laurentides region, 187 tickets were issued.

The ultimate goal was to encourage drivers to be responsible and prudent while driving and to ensure compliance with the Highway Safety Code.

Road safety in the presence of roadworks: what are the rules?

  • Obey the posted speed limits. In a work zone, the fine will be doubled if the offense is committed inside the work zone.
  • The driver of a road vehicle or a motorcyclist approaching a work area should slow down and use caution. He needs to make sure he can pass through the safe area. The number of demerit points attributable to this infraction has not been doubled.
  • When traffic is directed by a peace officer, or a signalman responsible for directing traffic during work, any person must, despite any contrary signage, obey their orders and signals.

Also, road users must obey orange signs, even in the absence of workers, as traffic conditions remain unusual. The construction of road works and the presence of traffic obstructions put construction workers and road users at risk for their safety.

In a work zone, the fines to which drivers intercepted in excess of speed are exposed are doubled. For example, in an area where the speed limit is 70 km/h, an excess speed of:

  • 20 km/h, the fine is $110;
  • 30 km/h, the fine of $210;
  • 45 km/h, fine of $390.
