The SOPFEU starts informing about fire danger
The Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) has begun the dissemination of fire danger for the 2021 season. The objective, according to the SOPFEU, is to allow the population to adapt their behavior in or near the forest according to the level of risk of fire. Data collection and weather forecasts have started for a few weather stations located in the south of the province. This year, the weather stations are opening earlier than usual, due to the spring being a little earlier than average.
Fire hazard is an assessment of the flammability of forest fuels (twigs, roots, trees, etc.) and brush. It comes from weather observations for the last few days, weather forecasts and fire history from previous years.
Remember that there are five levels of this danger (low, moderate, high, very high, extreme). For example, when the level varies from “high” to “extreme”, SOPFEU recommends caution and suggests avoiding smoking, fireworks or having a campfire in the forest or even staying in the forest.
