The Pontiac Sorting Center will have to pay more than $ 40,000 for breaking the law

The Pontiac Sorting Center will have to pay more than $40,000 for breaking the law. The Pontiac Sorting Center, located in the Regional Industrial Park in municipality of Litchfield, will have to pay $40,747 for violating the Law on quality of the environment. The company was found guilty of four offenses under that law.

According to a press release issued by the ministère de l’Environnement, et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, on May 17th, 2013, in Litchfield, being the holder of a license issued on June 8th, 2012, the Sorting Center failed to comply with its conditions during period of operation. It has stored wood and metal elsewhere than on the specific asphalt zones, has not waterproofed the sorting surfaces used by the installation of concrete slabs and has stored asphalt shingles outside a building, thereby violating three of the conditions of its authorization, section 123.1 of the Environment Quality Law.

Also, on September 8th, 2015, being the owner of a place where residual materials were stored or rejected, the company failed to take the necessary measures to ensure that these materials were stored, processed or disposed of in an authorized place, thus contravening Article 66, paragraph 2, of the Act on the quality of the environment.

According to the company, the purpose of the Pontiac Sorting Center is to allow contractors, municipalities and citizens to dispose of dry construction, renovation and demolition (CRD) materials that are not authorized for waste collection and that can be re-used or recovered.

The Pontiac Sorting Center has been fined $37,500 and, in addition to legal costs, is required to reimburse the Environment ministry for legal costs of $3,247.
