The Papier Masson plant is temporarily laying off workers
Papiers White Birch executives for the Papier Masson mill (located in the Masson sector in Gatineau) say they have seen encouraging signs for newsprint demand in global markets, but that demand remains below what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the management of White Birch Papers must proceed with the temporary layoff of its factory workers as of December 24.
The activities of the Papier Masson plant will gradually resume as of January 4, 2021, according to management. The company specifies that the essential services linked to the preservation of the installations and to the respect of environmental rules will be maintained during this period. Some maintenance work will also be carried out. The current situation has its share of repercussions in the market and the company is forced to suspend production temporarily. Management will make all the decisions necessary to mitigate the impact on their employees.
The Papiers White Birch Company manufactures newsprint, high gloss paper, cardboard and other specialty paper products at their three mills in Canada from where they serve customers across North America and around the world.
