Municipalities in the region have been advised by the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board that water levels are expected to increase in the area. Tomorrow, the expected rainfall could reach up to 55 mm and, combined with snowmelt, could have a significant impact on water levels. This is the case in the municipality of Mansfield and the possible situation of the Coulonge River in the coming days. As discussed, the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board’s model is currently predicting a rapid increase in flow on the Coulonge River in the coming days.

On April 15th (Monday) the flow was 95 m3/s

The predicted forecast shows that the flow could reach:
– Saturday, April 20th: total flow of 320 m3/s
– Sunday April 21st: total flow of 475 m3/s (flow in 2017)
– Monday April 22nd: total flow of 560 m3/s (flow in 2018)

According to many people near the Coulonge River, there was more ice than in past years.

Take the necessary precautions while there is still time

The Municipality of Mansfield is asking residents to take steps now to avoid as much damage as possible. “It is important, first, to store everything on your property and make sure you put away anything that could cause damage,” as said by the director general of Mansfield-et-Pontefract, Éric Rochon. Mansfield motto for this situation is clear: take no chances, and the time to take precautionary steps to avoid as much debris as possible right now. Near the Ottawa River, a lot of municipalities have for the most part asked their fire department to be ready in the event of a flood. It is also mentioned by the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board to communicate directly with your municipality if you have any questions or concerns about this.

Note that the forecasts are reviewed every day. The Municipality of Mansfield is also in constant communication with Brookfield Power regarding dam management.
