2 June 2021 à 12:00 am

The municipalities of the MRC Pontiac will be putting their flags at half mast in memory of the 215 victims who were recently discovered at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia.

To honor the 215 children whose remains were recently found on the site of a former residential school and to mark the start of National Indigenous History Month, the 18 municipalities of the MRC of Pontiac will lower their flags at half mast.

From Tuesday, June 1, the flags will be half-masted for one hour for each of the children who were found in this tragic discovery, to pay tribute to these children as well as to the many other Indigenous children who never returned to their homes, the survivors and their families.

On behalf of the staff of the MRC Pontiac, the Regional Council of Mayors and all the residents of Pontiac, I would like to express our grief for the victims and families of this terrible tragedy. We offer our support and our comfort to all the aboriginal peoples of Pontiac and Canada. Please know that we are here for you in these difficult times »
– Jane Toller, Warden of the Pontiac MRC

The Council of Mayors of the MRC Pontiac intends to send a resolution to the provincial and federal governments following its meeting on June 16, to show its support for the First Nations peoples of Canada and to submit a formal request that all sites of former residential schools be inspected. The Council also plans to demand that swift and tangible action be taken by our governments to move towards true reconciliation and reparations for all the mistreatment suffered by Indigenous communities in Canada.
