In a press release, the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) said it had a normal month of September. In the past month, 22 fires have burned 4.5 hectares (ha) of forest in the Intensive Protection Zone, mostly in southern and eastern Quebec. Note that 100% of the fires that occurred during the period were human causes. This number of fires is within the average of the last ten years for the month of September, which amounts to 20.6 fires, for an average of 5.84 hectares affected.

In addition, with the hunting season well underway, fires caused by the hunting camp’s backup heating systems and faulty or poorly maintained cooking devices caused a few hectares to be burnt in September.
