The Member of Parliament for Pontiac-Kitigan-Zibi welcomes Canada’s recognition of Palestine
In a press release sent to the media, Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi, welcomed her government’s announcement that Canada would recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, a position she says she has long defended within the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. “This decision is historic. It is a strong, necessary, and hopeful step toward a two-state solution, the only possible path to a just, lasting, and mutually respected peace,” said Ms. Chatel.
Ms. Chatel also expressed her full support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strong and clear statement calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and full respect for international humanitarian law. Canada is currently one of the three leading donors of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian civilian population. “As long as humanitarian access is blocked, relief remains out of reach. Political or military considerations should never hinder the right to life and dignity,” added Ms. Chatel, who won a second consecutive term in the riding of Pontiac, now known as Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi, in last spring’s federal election.
