The CAQ government announces investments in higher education in the Outaouais

The Minister of Higher Education, Danielle McCann, accompanied by the Minister responsible for the Outaouais, Mathieu Lacombe, was at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) yesterday (June 6), to confirm that the establishment will finally obtain a law program.

Minister Lacombe stressed that this announcement is also “symbolic” for the region at the moment, since according to him, it is Quebec professors who teach Quebec law to Quebecers in Ontario, at the University of Ottawa.

« Well, because we have to catch up in higher education in the Outaouais, whether at the CÉGEP de l’Outaouais or at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, UQO, we have to catch up. So, when we announce programs as we do today, three new programs for the CÉGEP and one more new program for the Université du Québec en Outaouais, we are contributing to that. So, for UQO, we are talking about a very first law program. That, I am particularly proud of that because currently, law in the region is mainly given on the Ontario side. You have to go through the University of Ottawa and this is the first time since the 1970s that there is a law program to be created in Quebec. So very, very proud of that. Then, well at the CÉGEP de l’Outaouais, we are talking about a radiodiagnostic technology program. »

It should also be noted that it has been announced that UQO will be grouped together in the future on a single site and not on separate campuses as is currently the case.

Also, the CAQ government announced the authorization to implement three new programs for the Cégep de l’Outaouais: Radiodiagnostic Technology, Social Work, Leisure Management and Intervention Techniques. The arrival of these programs is combined with an envelope of $3 million for the development of plans and specifications for expansions estimated at more than $20 million with a targeted delivery for 2024-2025 which will make it possible to accommodate these three new training courses.

“Faced with the urgency to act, in close collaboration with the CISSS de l’Outaouais, the Cégep has developed a plan to accelerate the implementation of the Radiodiagnostic Technology program and will welcome a first cohort as of January 2023, in particular by arranging the course grid to make everything possible,” say the spokespersons for the CAQ government in this matter.
