The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council positive in moose management case in La Vérendrye wildlife reserve

The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council is positive following the first meeting between representatives of the Algonquin Nation and the Quebec government on the issue of moose herd management in La Vérendrye wildlife reserve held just before the holiday break. For the Council of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation, this meeting will have allowed representatives of the two parties to take stock and initiate the first discussions.

In a press release, the Council considers that the meeting made it possible to present and establish everyone’s expectations on how the discussions should be held and to agree on a timetable for the holding of the next meetings during which the main subject will be discussed.

Mr. Lucien Wabanonik, councilor and member of the Lac Simon community, as well as Mr. Charles Ratt, councilor and representative of the Algonquin community of Barrière Lake, will be the two negotiators for the Algonquin Nation in this matter.
“We hope that these discussions will lead to a new relationship with the Government of Quebec and we place our trust in the work of our representatives,” said the Grand Chief of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council, Ms. Verna Polson.

Remember that last fall, the Anichinabe community of Barrière Lake attempted to prevent moose sport hunting in La Vérendrye wildlife reserve due to a decline in the population of this animal.
