Sunscreens sold online deemed ineffective

An investigation reveals that some sunscreens sold on the AliExpress, Shein, and Temu platforms offer little to no protection against UV rays and may contain concerning ingredients.

An investigation conducted by the French consumer magazine Que Choisir Ensemble has revealed that several sunscreens sold on AliExpress, Shein, and Temu do not effectively protect against the sun. After testing ten products, researchers found that some offered almost no protection and contained ingredients considered to be of concern.

Four of these products are still available to Canadian consumers, including the brands Ouhoe, Disaar, BioAqua, and Sadoer. Experts recommend checking that any sunscreen sold in Canada has a Drug Identification Number (DIN) or a Natural Product Number (NPN), proof that it is authorized by Health Canada.

Experts remind consumers that using ineffective sunscreen can increase the risk of sunburn and UV damage. They therefore advise consumers to buy approved products to ensure adequate protection.
