Spring flooding: state of emergency declared and measures strengthened in Fort-Coulonge
The municipality of Fort-Coulonge has declared a state of emergency to speed up the deployment of resources and limit the impacts of the spring flooding.
Sandbag dikes have been set up in areas considered at risk, notably on Bord-de-l’Eau Street and on the earthen bridge along Baume Street, to prevent any overflow. Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise.
The Red Bridge is closed until further notice. The White Bridge remains open but is under constant monitoring and could be restricted if conditions worsen. If it closes, the Terry Fox Bridge will be used as a detour route. Coordination is underway with the municipality of Mansfield-et-Pontefract to ensure continuity of emergency services.
According to the latest data, the Ottawa River could reach levels corresponding to moderate flooding. The current level stands at 108.52 metres and could stabilize around 108.7 metres, though this forecast may change. Meanwhile, the Coulonge River is flowing at 700 m³/s—nearly ten times above normal.
Cooler temperatures expected through Wednesday should slow snowmelt, and no rainfall is forecast in the coming days.
The municipality is urging residents to exercise caution, including removing objects from riverbanks, preparing for a possible worsening of conditions, and closely supervising children near flooded areas.
To support infrastructure, residents are also being asked to reduce their consumption of drinking water during this critical period.
Sand is being offered free of charge at the arena yard for filling sandbags. Residents can obtain bags by contacting the municipality. Any flood-related issues can be reported at 819-683-2259.
Authorities say they remain vigilant and ready to act to ensure public safety.
