Sophie Chatel Welcomes New Measures Announced by Mark Carney

8 September 2025 à 8:54 am

Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi MP Sophie Chatel issued a statement expressing her support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s launch of a national industrial strategy and new measures to assist Canadian workers and businesses in the face of President Trump’s tariffs.

“These initiatives are essential for our region. Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi relies on a diversified economy where agriculture, forestry, agri-food, and small family businesses play a central role. The new federal investments in workforce retraining, agricultural support, and market diversification will give our workers and entrepreneurs the tools they need to adapt to the realities of international trade,” said Chatel.

According to the government’s announcement, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) will receive up to $1 billion in support over the next three years. Non-repayable contributions will also be increased for eligible companies affected by tariffs across all impacted sectors, including agriculture. This assistance will be delivered through Canada Economic Development (DEC). The federal government also announced enhanced support for the AgriMarketing program, which will help local producers and farms diversify their markets and add value to their products.

“This represents a real opportunity for agricultural producers in Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi,” added Chatel.

The new “Buy Canadian” policy, which prioritizes local purchasing, could directly benefit food processing businesses, sawmills, and regional suppliers, thereby strengthening local supply chains.

“Our region’s workers, particularly in the forestry and manufacturing sectors, will now have access to modern training programs that allow them to transition into sustainable, high-quality jobs. We know how difficult a period the forestry industry is going through. That is why concrete support is being provided: more than 65 weeks of paid benefits to accompany career transitions—20 additional weeks—as well as tailored training delivered directly in the workplace. These measures represent a genuine opportunity for workers to enhance their skills and reposition themselves advantageously in the job market.

“Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi is rich in talent, innovation, and natural resources. By building on our local strengths, we are fully contributing to this new national momentum. I am proud to see that our workers, producers, and entrepreneurs are at the heart of this ambitious strategy,” Chatel concluded.
