SOPFEU rep discusses spring fire prevention

25 April 2023 à 2:22 pm

With the melting snow and warmer weather comes the time for spring yard cleaning and brush fires. CHIP 101.9 spoke with Melanie Morin, a communication and prevention specialist with the provincial forest fire fighting service SOPFEU to discuss the dangers of spring fires.

She explained that while it might be counterintuitive, spring is period with the most forest fires in Quebec. While the size of the fires in the summer months might be larger, the frequency of fires this time of year is the highest. Morin noted that if a fire takes place in a backyard or near property, the size can be rather relative.

So far this year, Morin said that there have been two forest fires in the Outaouais region, though none were in the Pontiac region. She added that there were plenty of other risk factors when people head into the bush for ATVing, camping or other outdoor activities.
