SOPFEU launches its first children’s storybook to raise awareness about wildfire prevention
The Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) has launched its very first children’s storybook, titled The Firefly Who Had a Dream. The event took place at the Monique-Corriveau Library in Quebec City, in the presence of the creative team behind the book as well as several young readers.
Featuring Garofeu, SOPFEU’s youth ambassador, the story aims to raise children’s awareness about safe behaviour in the forest to help prevent wildfires.
The tale follows the adventures of Victor, a young explorer searching for a treasure in a forest where the fire risk is high. With the help of Garofeu and Lulu the firefly, he learns that it is possible to enjoy adventures while respecting nature and avoiding actions that could spark a wildfire.
Through this initiative, SOPFEU hopes to continue its educational efforts with young people and their families. The organization believes that children can become valuable prevention ambassadors by sharing good practices with those around them.
The storybook is available for free in digital format on SOPFEU’s website and will soon be offered in public libraries across Quebec.
SOPFEU reminds the public that nearly 80% of forest fires are caused by human activity and stresses the importance of prevention, especially as periods of drought become more frequent due to climate change.
