“Some measures necessary, others not, but above all a lot of questions” -André Fortin

Introduced last week, the Legault government’s Bill 96 entitled Loi sur la langue officielle et commune du Québec, received attention. Some entrepreneurs in the region fear that this law will result in fines for their businesses, other citizens also fear that this bill does not go far enough to protect the French language.

The MNA for Pontiac, André Fortin, believes that there are good and bad things, but above all several elements to be clarified.

“This is a particularly complex bill. It’s not black or white. There is still a lot of room for interpretation and the government must clarify certain proposals. For example, many believe that it is the application of Law 101 to CEGEP, but it is not really that. We will have to define more on the government side. I am thinking of CEGEP Heritage here in the region, which will need clarity in certain aspects of the law ”

André Fortin believes that there are portions of the bill that are necessary, but thinks that certain measures, including those concerning services in municipalities, would have no impact in the protection of French in Quebec.

“The French language commissioner, who would be an independent body that could independently assess the state of the French language, is a useful measure. Most people also agree that federal regulatory companies should operate in French. These are all things that are useful and necessary. The problem that could arise is when it comes to the bilingual status of municipalities that could have an impact on the services that the English-speaking community receives.
