Seventh change in director generals within 4 years for Calumet Island

14 September 2021 à 12:00 am

The seventh director general to hold the position in L’Ile-du-Grand-Calumet since 2017 has resigned. Hired by the municipality in February of this year, Élaine Déry gave her letter of resignation on September 9 and it was accepted by council last night (September 13).

“We were still in a period of transition. We wish her good luck, we were satisfied with her services but the conditions are difficult. We thank her very much
– Serge Newberry, Mayor of Île-du-Grand-Calumet (translated)

This file has been an ongoing saga for the municipality, who have seen many people come and go from the position, as well as several complaints to the Commission municipale du Québec (CMQ) regarding a sitting councillor or the current mayor.

Councillor James Azola asked that the council meet with Déry to convince her to reconsider her decision. Other council members pointed out that it was important to accept her resignation immediately in order to open up the job posting as soon as possible. With less than three weeks to go before the start of the municipal election and less than two months before voting day, the council hopes to find somebody who can fill the role.

According to councillors, nothing specific was mentioned as the reasoning for Déry’s departure. Despite Newberry’s professed satisfaction with her work, he was also the subject of a complaint from her to the CMQ, which was filed in June. Newberry is scheduled to appear before a tribunal from October 12 to 15 regarding complaints from both the director general as well as other councillors.

A job posting for the position will be published shortly.
