SEPTEMBER: AN AVERAGE NUMBER OF FIRES

SEPTEMBER: AN AVERAGE NUMBER OF FIRES

7 October 2026 à 9:20 am

The wildfire season is not yet over, SOPFEU points out, even though September was relatively calm in Quebec.

According to the report published today, 29 wildfires were recorded in intensive protection zones, for a total area of only 1.5 hectares burned.

These figures are comparable to the 10-year average of 31 fires and 84.5 hectares burned in September.

Importantly, all fires recorded in September were caused by human activities. Campfires lead the way, accounting for 42% of fires. Waste burning and cigarettes each account for 10%, while industrial and forestry operations are responsible for 17% of fires.

The beginning of the month was marked by high humidity levels, which helped limit risks. But the situation changed from the third week of September, with a warm, dry and sunny period. 62% of the month’s fires occurred during this period, primarily in southern Quebec.

The Laurentian region was the most affected, with seven fires. In the northern zone, no fires were reported in September.

However, SOPFEU reminds us that caution is still required this fall. Hunting, cottage closures and forest recreation activities can still result in fire starts.

Improperly extinguished campfires, cooking appliances, heating systems in hunting shelters, cigarette butts or all-terrain vehicles can cause a fire.

Before heading into the forest, SOPFEU recommends checking the level of fire danger on its website or mobile application.
