4 March 2026 à 2:45 pm

Samonix has reached an important milestone in its salmon farming project in Litchfield, here in the Pontiac. The company has just signed a letter of intent with the Swedish firm Smögenlax Aquaculture AB, a leader in land-based aquaculture systems that has developed significant innovations.

Rémi Bertrand, Senior Director of Project Development, explains the original concept behind the project:

The partnership highlights the strong potential of land-based aquaculture, which allows fish to be raised locally, without antibiotics, in a sustainable way, and with a low environmental footprint. According to Mr. Bertrand, the project will ensure sustainable aquaculture while minimizing its environmental impact on the Litchfield region.

The agreement will accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions by leveraging Smögenlax’s recent technological advances, including its proprietary and patent-pending technologies. Samonix thus becomes a long-term development partner of the Swedish company for North America. This milestone marks an important day for Samonix. Smögenlax has recently made significant technological progress in aquaculture water treatment.

According to Mathieu Farley, President of Samonix Inc., the partnership underscores the project’s credibility and the promising future of the industry. It highlights the potential of land-based aquaculture, which enables fish to be raised locally, without antibiotics, sustainably, and with a low environmental footprint. Smögenlax’s patented technologies are expected to improve salmon production and water quality compared with traditional systems.

Naturally, the project will create numerous jobs. Rémi Bertrand explains how this initiative will benefit the local economy of the Pontiac:

It is also important to note that this project will contribute to Quebec’s food autonomy and increase the availability of locally produced salmon.

It should be noted that several steps will need to be completed during the project review by the BAPE. The process could take some time before moving forward with the launch of operations.
