Road safety: SQ and SAAQ distribute reflective backpack covers to young students
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ), in partnership with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), is launching a new initiative aimed at improving road safety around school zones. The project focuses on Grade 1 and 2 students who walk between home and school.
More than 3,000 children will receive a reflective cover designed to fit over their backpacks. Highly visible even in low light or bad weather, the cover features the word Prudence (“Caution”) and a turtle logo, reminding drivers and other road users to slow down and adopt safer behaviors. The cover is easy to use, requires no special handling once installed, and is adapted to the age of young students.
The selected schools are located in areas where interactions between pedestrians, motorists, and other road users present particular safety challenges.
The SQ emphasizes that schoolchildren are vulnerable road users and that their safety remains a priority. This initiative is part of the transportation network safety strategy Human Life at the Heart of Our Actions, which promotes measures to protect primary school students during their daily commute. Actions aligned with the strategy’s pillars—Partnership, Intervention, Awareness, Technology, and Evaluation (PISTE)—are being implemented by the SQ and its partners to make transportation networks safer for everyone.
