Road safety: 75% of vehicles exceed school zone limit
Road safety: 75% of vehicles exceed school zone limit
The CAA-Quebec Foundation for Road Safety is sounding the alarm regarding speed in the vicinity of schools. According to an observation activity carried out on October 7th in Quebec City, 75.2% of the 1,059 vehicles observed were travelling above the allowable limit of 30 km/h.
The average recorded speed was approximately 36 km/h. Some drivers were travelling at over 40 km/h, while one driver was caught driving at 69 km/h.
The observation also found that drivers were more compliant with limits in the morning. At-risk behaviours were more prevalent in the middle and end of the day.
CAA-Québec reminds you that a few fewer kilometres an hour can make a significant difference, since speed influences the distance required to react and stop a vehicle, as well as the severity of injuries in the event of a collision.
Motorists are advised to respect posted limits, slow down further when necessary, yield to pedestrians and follow the instructions of school crossing guards.
Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users also have a role to play by following the signage and using the designated crossings.
For the CAA-Québec Foundation, safety in the vicinity of schools depends on the vigilance and responsibility of all road users.
