The COVID-19 pandemic took its toll on Litchfield native hockey player Quinn O’Brien. After his stint in Ottawa, Quinn was to continue in hockey by moving to Scotland, where he had received an offer to play this season. This first attempt was canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A few days later, a team located in western France, in the city of Tours, offered him a contract, which he accepted. Hours before his departure, he receives a message that once again the pandemic will have a say in his fate. “The team in France also had to cancel the deal given the pandemic. Of course that’s a shame, but I think I have to stay prepared. A lot can happen in the space of a few months, ”said Quinn O’Brien. He explained the reasons why he would like to evolve in Europe.
A natural leader, he was named captain not only during his stint with the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) but also with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. “It’s hard to predict what the COVID-19 pandemic has in store for us.” Quinn O’Brien still continued to train off the ice to be ready to contribute to his next lineup. “I continue to train and hope to return to the ice in the next few weeks,” said Quinn. However, even training on the ice is not as easy as it used to be.
Quinn O’Brien has decided to focus on a more physical job in landscaping for now, which helps to stay physically active. Still a resident of the Pontiac, Quinn believes it will be difficult to access an arena. Going to play in Europe would be a dream for O’Brien, but above all he wants to contribute to a team. “I miss hockey. Yes, I would like to go and play in Europe, but most of all I want to bring something more to a team. I have always contributed, on and off the ice and I know I still have a lot to learn, ”explained the man who spent 4 years in the QMJHL, first in Rouyn-Noranda and then in Charlottetown. Possessing a baccalaureate, a positive attitude, athletic qualities that make him an effective right winger, he hopes that European teams will show their interest when the situation is more stable.
