Quebec adds a vaccine to its infant immunization program

Since May 2026, the pneumococcal vaccine has been offered free of charge to infants in Quebec as part of the public immunization program. Quebec thus became the second Canadian province, after British Columbia, to include this vaccine in the routine immunization schedule for young children.

This vaccine aims to better protect babies against infections caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium, which can lead to serious illnesses such as meningitis, septicemia, and pneumonia.

Unlike the PREVNAR 13 vaccine used previously, PREVNAR 20 protects against 20 different pneumococcal serotypes, including several associated with severe forms of the disease and increased antibiotic resistance.

The addition of the vaccine follows a recommendation from the Quebec Immunization Committee, which considers PREVNAR 20 a preferred option for vaccinating infants and young children. Health authorities reiterate that vaccination remains essential for preventing complications, reducing hospitalizations, and protecting the most vulnerable children.
