A new public opinion poll suggests 82% of Outaouais residents surveyed support Bill S-229, proposed federal legislation aimed at strengthening protections for Gatineau Park.

Pontiac–Kitigan Zibi MP Sophie Chatel and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Ottawa Valley chapter are calling on the Senate to complete its study of the bill quickly so it can proceed to the House of Commons.

Bill S-229 proposes amendments to the National Capital Act that would establish Gatineau Park’s boundaries, prioritize ecological integrity in its management, restrict the sale of public lands within the park, and strengthen consultation with the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation and neighbouring municipalities.

The poll also reportedly found gaps in public awareness of the park’s current legal status and management. The organizations say the results demonstrate strong public support for passing the legislation this fall.

The poll results are being presented at a media availability hosted by Chatel and the conservation group on Tuesday, October 27th, at Gatineau Park.
