Pamela Harvey identified after 47 Years of disappearance thanks to interprovincial collaboration
An investigation jointly conducted by the Sûreté du Québec, the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), the Quebec Coroner’s Office, and the Laboratory of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine (LSJML) has led to the identification of Pamela Harvey, who had been missing since 1978.
Pamela Harvey, then 23 years old, was last seen in Sudbury, Ontario, on December 25th, 1978. A few months later, in March 1979, the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, and was determined to be a homicide victim. Despite the technological limitations of the time, investigators carefully preserved the evidence, allowing modern scientific methods—particularly DNA analysis—to be applied today.
For nearly five decades, investigators from the SRPS and later the GSPS remained dedicated to the case. In 2018, the National DNA Program for Missing Persons enabled the collection of DNA samples from Pamela’s family, which were entered into the national database. This step was crucial in linking the unidentified remains to the missing young woman.
In 2025, a forensic odontologist established a connection between Pamela Harvey’s disappearance and the victim found in Saint-Eustache. Analyses conducted by the LSJML, comparing evidence preserved since 1979 with the family DNA samples, led to a positive match confirmed by the Quebec Coroner’s Office.
Advances in forensic science and DNA analysis have thus made it possible to identify Pamela Harvey nearly 50 years after her disappearance, finally providing answers to her family. Investigators also determined that the person presumed responsible for her murder died in 1979.
Pamela Harvey’s family has requested that their privacy be respected and will not make any public statements. Authorities and investigators emphasize the importance of this interprovincial collaboration and express gratitude to the professionals whose dedication and perseverance made this resolution possible.
This case highlights the commitment and determination of law enforcement over the years to honor the memory of victims and provide answers to families left in uncertainty.
