The Quebec government is investing $2,619,759 to modernize 28 schoolyards in the Outaouais region. The announcement was made in Gatineau by Suzanne Tremblay, Regional Government Assistant and Member of the National Assembly for Hull, on behalf of Education Minister Sonia LeBel.
The projects aim to transform school outdoor spaces into more attractive, safe, and conducive environments for physical activity. The improvements will include the installation of play structures, street furniture, sports equipment, obstacle courses, outdoor classrooms, relaxation areas, and green spaces.
The Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais School Service Centre will benefit from three projects. At Sainte-Marie School, play structures and trees will be installed. The Sacred Heart Academy will be equipped with a pathway, new trees, and street furniture, while a sports area will be created at Sieur-de-Coulonge High School.
Other projects will be carried out in the Portages-de-l’Outaouais, Draveurs, and Cœur-des-Vallées school service centres, as well as within the Western Quebec School Board.
According to Suzanne Tremblay, a well-designed schoolyard fosters students’ sense of belonging and provides them with a more stimulating environment for playing, socializing, and learning.
The Minister of Education, Sonia LeBel, emphasized that young people need daily physical activity and that suitable outdoor spaces contribute to their concentration in class and their academic success.
Across Quebec, more than $24 million is being invested this year to support 259 schoolyard improvement projects under the Quebec Infrastructure Plan.
