“Out of respect for the citizens, this matter has already cost the municipality of l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet more than $ 20,000, I don’t want to raise the bill”
The municipal councillor of the municipality of l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet, Réjean Meilleur, began his 10-day suspension today as a result of the investigation conducted by the Commission Municipale du Québec (CMQ).
The CMQ mainly blamed the councillor for the relationship and disrespect he had with certain employees. However, the more serious accusations, such as the death threat denounced by the Director General, Sabrina Larivière, and the breach of his duty of confidentiality, were dismissed.
When meeting with the CHIP 101.9 newsroom, Réjean Meilleur said he was relieved and he did not want an appeal since he did not want the residents of the municipality to pay more for this affair.
“Out of respect for the citizens, this matter has already cost the municipality of l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet more than $ 20,000. I don’t want to increase the bill and I will respect the sanction handed down by the CMQ”, explained Meilleur. He also said firmly that he would finish his current term. Réjean Meilleur added that he was shaken by the words of Director General Larivière, who said that he had threatened her to death.
In the final judgment, the judge noted to this effect: “None of the witnesses, except for Sabrina Larivière, perceived these words as a death threat. Madame Larivière was particularly sensitive”, wrote judge Sylvie Piérard. “These kinds of charges could have been dealt with criminally with the risk of incarceration, these are serious charges”, said councillor Meilleur.
Réjean Meilleur said he now wants to be more vigilant and courteous in the future, but that he does not feel confident within the environment of the municipal council of l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet, and that he will now take the necessary precautions to protect his reputation.
The final judgment is available in full via the CMQ website.
