Ontario MP Cheryl Gallant wants flood victims to get direct help from the federal government
Renfrew Nipissing-Pembroke MP (Ontario), Cheryl Gallant, sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, asking the federal government to provide direct assistance to flood victims. CHIP 101.9 had the opportunity to discuss with Gallant at her request.
Gallant regrets that the assistance provided by the Government of Canada is not sufficient to respond to demand and to meet the needs of the victims. “Although the provincial authorities are willing to provide partial assistance to flood victims, with a ceiling of losses, these programs differ between citizens of different provinces and types of residences.” Gallant said in a press release issued Thursday morning. The shores of Ontario and Quebec must work together in this fight against the floods caused by the Ottawa River. Cheryl Gallant met with Warden, Jane Toller, recently to work on some of the requests from the Government of Canada.
Cheryl Gallant also attended the public consultation, yesterday afternoon in Campbell’s Bay, regarding the new special intervention zone that will be established by the Government of Quebec. She explained that she would like to hear the concerns of Pontiac residents and talked about the federal government role in taking at least some steps in support of the flood victims.
In concluding her letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Gallant requested that the government reimburse some landlord fees and release additional funds to carry out mitigation and other safeguards, which are “necessary actions and omissions of the Government of Canada.”
It is also expected that the Ottawa River Regulation Commission, along with the International Joint Commission, reviews the water flow calculations, and “immediately corrects” the water management procedures to “prevent damage to home owners”.
Cheryl Gallant is asking citizens in her riding to support her call for a federal flood funding by sending an e-mail to the Prime Minister via the following address: www.cherylgallant.com/trudeau-floods
