Ontario man nabbed twice in two days for suspected drug-impaired driving
Late last week, a 49 year-old man from Sturgeon Falls Ont. was arrested twice in two days for suspected drug-impaired driving by the Pontiac detachment of the Sûreté du Québec.
On Thursday evening (October 17) at around 7 p.m., police were called to the scene of a minor 2-vehicle accident on rue Main in Portage-du-Fort. No injuries were reported, but officers arrested one driver and took him to the hospital for a blood sample, as they suspected he was impaired. He was released with a date at the Campbell’s Bay court house and while his vehicle was towed, he was able to pick it up the following day.
At around 10 p.m. on Friday (October 18), police were called about a vehicle that had gone off the road on chemin des Outaouais in l’Ile-du-Grand-Calumet. Officers discovered it was the same individual and vehicle as the previous evening, and arrested the driver for suspected drug-impaired driving. He was taken to the police station in Campbell’s Bay where he was evaluated by an officer trained in drug-recognition and provided a urine sample. He was again released with a summons as well as a 90-day driving ban in Quebec.
SQ spokesperson Sgt. Marc Tessier explained that had the driver been from Quebec, the first offence would likely have resulted in a license suspension of some kind, however the procedures are slightly different for those with Ontario licenses.
