National Patriots’ Day: public holiday and workers’ rights
May 18th marks National Patriots’ Day, a recognized provincial holiday in Quebec. On this occasion, eligible employees are entitled to paid time off, in accordance with current labor regulations.
National Patriots’ Day is a provincial holiday. In most cases, eligible employees are therefore entitled to paid time off. Eligibility requirements may vary, however, depending on employment status and the applicable collective agreement.
When an employee is required to work on a statutory holiday, the employer must generally choose between two compensation options:
- pay compensation equivalent to the statutory holiday
- offer paid compensatory time off on another date
These terms apply in accordance with the rules set forth in Quebec’s labor standards and may be specified in collective bargaining agreements or employment agreements.
Rights related to statutory holidays are intended to ensure fair compensation for employees, whether they are on leave or required to work. Employers must comply with these obligations or risk non-compliance with labor standards.
Please also note that the CHIP 101.9 offices will be closed all day on Monday, May 18th, for this occasion.
